The University of Illinois’ women’s soccer team started its season with a win under its belt but didn’t stop there.

After winning an exhibition game against 11th-ranked Notre Dame 1-0, the team proved just how deep its bench is.

“We got a lot of players in, some freshmen got some good, quality minutes against a good opponent,” head coach Janet Rayfield said. “I think this game tells us that we're going to be deep.”

The regular season opened for the Illini with a 2-0 shutout against Morehead State. Two days later the team took down the Redbirds in a competitive 1-0 win. Even with the Redbirds outshooting the Illini in the second half, the Illini’s defense held strong.

With a strong team that can work under pressure, the Illini look forward to a successful season.
