University of Illinois has fired athletic director Mike Thomas prior to releasing the final report of its investigation into mistreatment of football and women’s basketball and soccer players.

Interim chancellor Barbara Wilson said Monday the report has found no wrongdoings on Thomas. Despite that, she wanted to change the staff to prevent more trouble.

“A change in leadership was needed in order to move forward,” Wilson said.

Thomas said in a press release he believes that he acted appropriately but accepts Wilson’s decision to be let go.

Fighting Illini football coach Tim Beckman was fired in August due to the same mistreatment charges Thomas was facing.
