Illinois State University Director of Athletics Larry Lyons announced Tuesday, Nov. 12 a trio of head coach extensions.
Third-year women's basketball coach Kristen Gillespie, second-year baseball coach Steve Holm and sixth year track and field coach Jeff Bovee all signed extensions through 2024.
Only in her third season at the helm, Gillespie has made great strides with the Redbirds. Last year's finish of 19-12 was the most wins in six seasons and the 11-7Missouri Valley Conference record was the best since the 2012-13 season.
“Kristen has made significant improvements in our women’s basketball program in a short period of time,” Lyons stated. “We look forward to competing for championships for years to come under her leadership.”
Holm impressed in his first season as head coach. The former Purdue pitching coach transformed the Redbirds from the basement of the Missouri Valley Conference to an NCAA Tournament appearance in only one season.
“Steve made it very clear in his first year as a head coach that he has a very high skill set and our young men responded to his coaching,” Lyons said. “We expect good things to continue to happen at Duffy Bass Field.”
Bovee has been a constant leader for both men's and women's track for the past six years. Bovee has turned ISU into a force to be reckoned with in the MVC. En route to an MVC Coach of the Year Award, Bovee lead the Redbirds to a clean sweep at the MVC Indoor Track and Field Championship.
“Jeff has built two programs to championship level, as both our men’s and women’s track and field/cross country programs are the class of the MVC,” Lyons said. “We are confident in his ability to keep them performing at a high level.”
