The Illinois State women's gymnastics welcomed Illinois-Chicago, Northern Illinois and No. 22 nationally-ranked Illinois to Horton Field House for the Illinois Classic quad meet Sunday, March 5. Illinois came in first with a score 196.150, Illinois State came in second with a score of 193.550, followed by Northern Illinois with a score of 193.550 and UIC finished fourth with a 193.525.

The Illinois State gymnastics team tied for second place with Northern Illinois University after scoring 193.550 total points in the Illinois Classic quad meet Sunday afternoon at Horton Fieldhouse.

The meet also included University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of Illinois-Chicago. The Illini took first place in all four events and won the annual competition with a score of 196.150. The win was its tenth consecutive in the Illinois Classic. UIC finished fourth with an all-around score of 193.525.

ISU scored a 49.000 on the floor and ISU freshman Gabrielle Cooke finished first on the floor with a score of 9.900 out of a possible 10.

“I thought floor was great, every single one of their performances was really good,” ISU head coach Bob Conkling said.

ISU sophomore Meredith LaRoche finished with the highest all-around score for the Redbirds and fourth overall in the event with 38.825 points out of a possible 40. Cooke finished fifth in the event with an all-around score of 38.500.

The Redbirds experienced some struggle and finished third on the balance beam with 47.875 points.

“We’re much better on beam than that. It wasn’t bad, I thought that they controlled a few things and they were a little nervous and didn’t just get up and attack the routines, but we’ll work on that this week,” Conkling said.

ISU will host Lindenwood this Friday for its final meet of the season before the MIC Championship in Chicago March 18.
