Illinois State football fans celebrate during a 2015 game at Hancock Stadium.

With the new FCS season a month away, Illinois State has been chosen to finish fourth in the 2016 MVFC preseason poll. ISU is coming off of back-to-back MVFC regular season titles as well as making an appearance in the playoffs three out of the last four seasons.

"I do not put much thought into preseason rankings, the fans like it and a lot of anticipation comes along with the poll," Brock Spack said. "Some predictions are accurate while others do not come to hold their truth."

Five-time defending national champion North Dakota State is picked to finish atop the conference, which received 37 first-place votes. Northern Iowa and South Dakota State round out the top three.

Kyle Avaloy, Mark Spelman, Brady Tibbits, Anthony Warrum and Alex Kocour have been selected to the 2016 MVFC Preseason Team. Spelman, Warrum and Avaloy have also been named as STATS preseason All-Americans.

"We like our options on offense considering we lost key pieces such as the quarterback and running back. We have a lot of tough players on this year’s roster."

Youngstown State, Western Illinois, South Dakota, Southern Illinois, Indiana State and Missouri State finish the conference standings, respectively.

ISU will embark on the 2016 regular season Sept. 3 when it hosts Valparaiso at Hancock Stadium.
