ISU falls to Purdue 2-0 in preseason finale

Although outshooting its opponent in shots 19-18, the Illinois State women’s soccer team fell to Purdue, 2-0 Friday at Adelaide Street Field on Friday afternoon.

With the loss, ISU ended its two game preseason 0-2, being outscored 6-0. The first loss was at Notre Dame on Aug. 11, where they fell, 0-4.

ISU fired away 19 shots but were unable to capitalize against the Boilermakers. Purdue’s two goals both came in the first half, while their defense stood tall against the Redbirds in the second half.

Rachel Tejada led all Redbirds with four shots, two of them coming on goal. Redshirt senior, Aryn Newsom, spent the entire 90 minutes in goal tallying up five saves. The 19 shots show a bright spot for the team as they move forward to the regular season.

The Redbirds now shift their attention to Northern Illinois University, who they will face Friday at home in the first game of the regular season. ISU boasts a 9-3-1 all-time series advantage going into the match. Friday’s kickoff against NIU is scheduled for 4 p.m.

High expectations for Illinois State Soccer

Entering the fall season, the Illinois State soccer team has been selected the preseason favorites to win the Missouri Valley Conference for the third consecutive season.

The Redbirds accounted for six of seven possible first place votes racking up 48 points overall. ISU had a 19-13 last season, while going a perfect 6-0 in conference play.

The program looks for a repeat as MVC regular season champions and is looking for its fourth-straight MVC Tournament crown.

They will be led offensively by three-time MVC Player of the Year Rachel Tejada (15 G, 12 A, 2 GW), 2013 Freshman of the Year Hannah Leinert (16 G, 6 A, 5 GW), and sophomore standout Dagny Olson, who scored six goals last season.

On the defensive side of the ball, Illinois State will be led by senior, Gabbi McArtor, and 2013 All-MVC Second Team honoree, junior Abby Van Deventer.

In the net, the Redbirds boast goalkeeper Aryn Newsom. The redshirt senior is within reach to hold the program records in all-time wins and saves by the end of the season. Newsom was also awarded last season's MVC Goalkeeper of the Year.

Five Redbirds including Tejada, Leinert, Van Deventer, Olson and Newsom were selected to the Preseason All-MVC team.

Although they finish the preseason 0-2, ISU fans can expect a promising future for this year’s program. The Redbirds open up the regular season against NIU this Friday at 4 p.m. while they begin conference play against Missouri State on Sept. 28.
