The Missouri Valley Conference weekly honors highlighted two Illinois State University softball players on Feb. 17. Sophomore Emme Olson earned the MVC Player of the Week award as freshman Dayna Kennedy won the MVC Newcomer of the Week award.
All of Illinois State’s games for that weekly award period were part of the Arizona State Littlewood Classic, hosted by ASU in Tempe, Arizona. The field consisted of ranked opponents No. 10 Kentucky and No. 23/22 ASU as well as Boise State and Detroit Mercy.
Olson and Kennedy’s play were the saving grace for ISU as they went 2-3 while being shut out twice. Olson earned a .526 batting average and 7 RBIs while starting all five games for the ’Birds. Kennedy led the way for ISU at the plate, hitting .556 and earning three walks.
“Emme (Olson) had a breakout weekend for us,” ISU head coach Melinda Fischer told GoRedbirds.com, “Emme was, by far, the most consistent player that we had.”
“I’m very excited for Dayna (Kennedy),” Fischer said of the utility player “She’s been in a catching position for us, a designated player and in the outfield, so she’s moved all around, and this weekend with more opportunities, really proved her worth in our lineup.”
The Redbirds will be back in action at Florida Atlantic University’s “Strike-Out Cancer” Tournament in Boca Raton, Florida, playing five games Feb. 21-23.
