Members of Illinois State women's basketball team huddling up on court during the Redbirds win over the Aces

Illinois State women's basketball season remains alive as the Redbirds have been selected to participate in the Women's National Invitational Tournament announced by the tournament organizers March 16.

Illinois State (15-7) will face Tulane (17-8) at 8 p.m. CT March 19 in the Memphis Regional.

This will be the Redbirds’ 13th WNIT appearance and the first postseason appearance for the Redbirds since 2012-2013. They are 20-18 all time in the tournament. This will also be head coach Kristen Gillespie’s first postseason appearance at National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I level.

Two other Missouri Valley Conference teams made the field, Drake and Northern Iowa. Missouri State and Bradley both qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

The 2021 WNIT will feature 32 teams with eight teams at each of the four regional sites: Charlotte, North Carolina, Fort Worth, Texas, Memphis, Tennessee, and Rockford. Each team is guaranteed two games, with an eight-team championship bracket and a four-team consolation bracket at each location.

Here’s the schedule for the 2021 WNIT:

  • March 19- Round one
  • March 20- Round two winners and consolation bracket games
  • March 22- Regional finals and consolation finals (round three)
  • March 26- Semifinals (four regional champions)
