For the first time in 25 years, the Illinois Wesleyan football team (3-2, 2-2) will play Carroll University (0-5, 0-3) on Saturday at Schneider Stadium in Waukesha, Wis.
This is the first season CU has played in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin after spending the past 25 years in the Midwest Conference. Before that, the Pioneers were members of the CCIW from 1955 to 1992. The last time these two schools faced off against each other was back in 1991.
IWU got back on the winning side of things after defeating Augustana last week 42-6 at home. Senior running back Maurice Shoemaker-Gilmore ran for 212 yards, which tied the tenth most for a player in a single game in IWU history.
The Pioneers of CU, meanwhile, have had a rough time making the transition back to the CCIW. The team has lost to Augustana (41-14), Carthage (38-14), and Elmhurst (45-34) in conference play.
While many expect Shoemaker-Gilmore, the CCIW’s leading rusher, to display another solid performance, fans should look to his counterpart during Saturday’s game. CU senior running back Bennett Kothe is fourth in the CCIW in rushing with an average of 73.2 rushing yards in five games.
Kickoff will be at 1 p.m.
