A 22nd-minute goal by redshirt junior Lauren Koehl proved to be the difference between the 'Birds and the Badgers.
There was plenty of action early on in the game, but neither team could find the back of the net. Koehl found herself streaking down the field leading to a strike from the top right corner of the box to the back of the net for the go-ahead goal.
Through the rest of the game, tough defense and solid goalkeeping from Jessica Galason proved to be another key for the 'Birds victory. Galason made five saves during the match while the Redbird defense halted eight Wisconsin corner kicks.
Galason was superb in her first career start. The redshirt freshman has yet to concede a goal through 155 minutes of play.
The Redbird soccer program notched its first win against a Big Ten opponent since 2011. It was against no slouch either. Wisconsin was in the preseason top 25 rankings and will battle a tough Big Ten conference.
The win moves ISU’s record to 2-3-1 on the year. The 'Birds started out their five-game road trip on a positive note, and will hopefully continue that trend next weekend when they play George Mason and Navy. They will get things started Friday when they square off with the Patriots in Fairfax, Virginia.
