Illinois State quarterback Jake Kolbe completed 30 passes and racked up 279 passing yards -- both career-highs -- during the Redbirds' 9-7 upset over Northwestern. ISU's victory boosted them to No. 5 in the FCS National Polls.

NORMAL -- Illinois State jumped five spots in both the HERO Sports Top 25 and STATS FCS Top 25 polls from No. 10 to No. 5 after upsetting Northwestern 9-7 in Evanston on Saturday. 

The Redbirds also moved up four spots from No. 9 to No. 5 in the FCS Coaches Poll. 

ISU's win against NU was the Redbirds' first victory against a Big Ten opponent in nine games and improved coach Brock Spack's record to 58-29.

Six Missouri Valley Football Conference teams, led by top-10 ranked teams North Dakota State (1), ISU (5), Northern Iowa (9) and South Dakota State (9) are ranked in the three polls this week.

Western Illinois (15) and Youngstown State (20) are also in the Top 25.

The No. 5-ranked Redbirds will host in-state rival Eastern Illinois (1-1, 0-0 OVC) 2 p.m. Saturday in the Mid-America Classic at Hancock Stadium on Family Weekend.

ISU squeezed by EIU last season in a 34-31 overtime victory that featured a game-winning field goal by Sean Slattery.
