NORMAL- The Illinois State University gymnastics team completed its 2015/16 regular season with a fourth place finish at the Midwest Independent Conference Championships.
The Redbirds finished with a final tally of 192.825 points. Lindenwood won the 2016 conference championship with an overall score of 194.925. Southeast Missouri State (194.375) and Texas Women’s (193.325) finished second and third, respectively. UIC (191.625) and Centenary (188.825) rounded out the remaining six teams in the championship. Texas Women’s Schyler Jones was the all-around individual winner with a combined score of 39.075.
ISU’s Amanda Mohler, who was awarded the MIC Senior of the Year beforehand, took home the conference championship on the balance beam with an average score of 9.900. This was the second consecutive year that Mohler took All-MIC honors.
Sophomore Marie Priest also won second-team All-MIC honors and scored a 9.800 on the balance beam, enough for a sixth place finish.
Head coach Bob Conkling noted that the competition was tough, with all of the teams on their A-games. “A few more healthy bodies and I think we would have finished better, but the team we had out there tonight did the best they could do and I am very proud of their effort,” he said.
The Redbirds now look forward to next season, where they are expected to have members such as Priest, junior Kristyn Bossle, sophomore Megan Knoernschild and junior Demi Pas return to the team.
