The Illinois State gymnastics team traveled to Denver Sunday for a tri-meet with nationally ranked University of Denver (No. 8) and University of Illinois (No. 22).

The host Denver team secured first place in the meet with a score of 196.975, followed by Illinois at 195.540. Illinois State rounded out the field with a 192.175.

Illinois State’s total score was its second lowest of the season and the first time failing to reach 192.500 since Jan. 29.

"We will step back in the gym learning a lot from this meet," ISU coach Bob Conkling said. "We learned that cleaning up our gymnastics, confidence and better consistency puts us where we need to be if we want to be more competitive the rest of the season.

Freshman Gabrielle Cooke continued her consistency in the all-around, finishing in third place with a score of 38.975.

Cooke nearly posted a perfect score on the balance beam event with her personal-best of 9.900. ISU’s Demi Pas finished right behind her teammate with a score of 9.850.

The Redbirds have two meets remaining before the MIC Championship in Chicago on March 18.

ISU returns to action Sunday at the Horton Fieldhouse at 2 p.m.
