The Illinois State University softball team struck quickly in the first inning against Long Island University, thanks to a lead off Mack Leonard’s home run to centerfield.
The Redbirds scored three in the top of the third as well. An Emme Olson hit forced an error which brought in Olson, Kaili Chval and Taylor Vanderpool to score. This put the Redbirds up 4-0 at the end of the top of the third.
The Redbirds then scored in the fourth and fifth innings thanks Kadi Borries and Alyssa Wiebel batting in runs in the respective innings, extending the Redbirds’ lead to 6-0.
The Redbirds put the cherry on top in the seventh, where an error saw Kaili Chval score again.
Later, Alyssa Wiebel scored thanks to a double from Dayna Kennedy, sealing off a Redbird victory 8-0.
ISU 9, HU 0
Both teams started out slow offensively with neither the Redbirds nor the Hofstra University Pride scoring in the first two innings.
However, this changed in the third inning where an Olson home run drove herself and Leonard in, putting the Redbirds up 2-0.
Then in the fourth inning, the Redbirds’ hitting caught fire, exploding for seven runs.
An Andrea Coursey double saw Wiebel make it home. Then, an error off a Chloe Jefferson hit saw Coursey make it to home plate.
After that in the same inning, Borries scored after Taylor Vanderpool stole second base.
Vanderpool would then go on to score off a Leonard double to left-center field. Leonard then made it home off an Olson double.
Finally, the Redbirds’ onslaught stopped after Olson scored on a Wiebel hit, bringing the score to 9-0 at the end of the fourth.
The game was called soon thereafter in the fifth inning which left the Redbirds victorious 9-0.
ISU 2 UNF 1
The Illinois State Redbirds beat the University of North Florida 2-1 in the Redbird’s final game of the FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament.
The Redbirds scored quickly on an Olson fielder’s choice putting them up 1-0 in the first.
UNF struck back in the top of the third, thanks to a Redbird error which allowed Rebecca Koskey to score. This tied the game up 1-1 in three innings of play.
The game stayed 1-1 until the eighth inning. An Wiebel double to left-center field allowed Chval to take home plate and secure an ISU victory.
The win capped off a sweep for the Redbirds giving them a record of 6-7. Three games were cancelled over the weekend.
