Soccer vs. Northwestern 23

Goalkeeper Haley Smith has been named the MVC Defensive Player of the Week.

After moving into third place in the all-time Illinois State women’s soccer saves list with 200, goalkeeper Haley Smith earned her second Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor, and the sixth of her career.

Smith surpassed Andrea Shaw in all-time saves, who played for the Redbirds from 2003-2006.

The Redbirds suffered two 1-0 losses over the week at Big Ten opponents Wisconsin and at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Smith did all she could, collecting 13 saves on 30 shots, with one coming from a 44-minute penalty kick against the Badgers.

The junior ISU goalie has totaled 43 saves this season in eight games played.

The Redbirds will close their long road trip at 2 p.m. Friday at Toledo, before returning to Adelaide Street Field at noon Sunday against Omaha.
