Freshman Ashley Santos (18) keeps the ball away from UMKC.

Twelve matches into the season, Illinois State soccer has its first winning streak of the year.

An early second half goal by junior Angel Krell, her third of the season, helped the Redbirds (5-5-2, 0-1) beat Western Illinois (1-10) 1-0 Sunday in Macomb.

The victory is ISU’s second in a row after the team previously beat Missouri-Kansas City, 1-0, on Friday in Normal.

Throughout the match, the Redbirds were able to frequently shoot the ball against Western’s defense.

It wasn’t until at 47:30, two and a half minutes into the second half, that Krell got the Redbirds’ first and only goal of the match after getting a pass from sophomore Mikayla Unger.

ISU ultimately outshot the Leathernecks 22-7 in the game.

Sophomore goalkeeper Haley Smith only needed to make two saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season.

The Redbirds host Illinois-Chicago at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Adelaide Street Field in what will be their final non-conference match of the regular season.
