Illinois State football player Mark Spelman was named the MVFC Offensive Player of the Week Monday. Spelman played a key role in the 38-21 win over league-leading South Dakota State.
The senior from Brookfield, Wis. graded out at 95 percent, did not allow any sacks against the Jackrabbits and tallied six knockdowns. Spelman opened the field for senior running back Jamal Towns, who broke his career high with a total of 136 yards rushing and set a career-best 17 carries, allowing him to score a rushing touchdown, his first of the season. The `Birds beat the Jackrabbits in rushing 209-83.
This is the second time Spelman has been named the MVFC Offensive Player of the Week in his career and the second time this season a Redbird has been the MVFC Offensive Player of the Week, the other being Cameron Lee.
The `Birds will take the field again at 1 p.m. Saturday in Macomb to face off against Western Illinois.
