Newsom named MVC Goalkeeper of the Week

Redshirt Senior Aryn Newsom has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Goalkeeper of the Week after a 1-0 shutout over Evansville last Saturday.

Her shutout against Evansville was her fifth of the season. While not allowing a single goal against conference-rival Evansville, Newsom also lowered her goals against average to 1.41.

Newsom recently broke the program record for wins (40) with just over a handful of games left in the season.

Newsom along with the Redbirds will look to continue their defensive dominance. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m., when they travel to Loyola Saturday.

Roberson, Coprich earn MVFC Weekly Honors

Following a dominant 45-10 win against No. 9 South Dakota State on Saturday, quarterback Tre Roberson was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Week while running back Marshaun Coprich was named MVFC Offensive Player of the Week.

This is ISU’s fourth MVFC honor this season, and the first for both Roberson and Coprich. Previous MVFC honorees this season are linebacker Pat Meehan and offensive lineman Rocco Ammons.

Roberson, a junior transfer from Indiana completed seven passes for 168 yards and a touchdown while rushing for a career-high 151 yards. As starting QB, he has led the Redbirds to a perfect 4-0 record to begin the season.

Coprich rushed for 174 yards on 24 carries and ran in a career-high four touchdowns during the Redbirds victory over SDSU. This marks his fourth 100-plus yard rushing performance on the season. Coprich is tied for the league leading in touchdowns with 10 rushing touchdowns.

Roberson and Coprich will lead the Redbirds in their first road game of the season against Indiana State. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST Saturday, Oct. 11. at Memorial Stadium in Terre Haute, Ind. The game will be broadcast live on Comcast SportsNet Chicago and also on ESPN3.

Hoopfest set for Oct. 16 at Redbird Arena

ISU fans will have the opportunity to get a first look at the 2014-15 Redbird men’s and women’s basketball teams at the annual Redbird Hoopfest at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16. The event is free to the public and doors at Redbird arena will open at 6:30 p.m.

The event will include Reggie’s Slam Jam, a kid-only dunk contest, a scrimmage between students and coaches, a shootout challenge with ISU players and student participants and a scrimmage of both teams.

Reggie’s Slam Jam is open to kids ages 12 and under. Contestants will have an opportunity to display their dunking skills on an adjustable youth-sized basketball hoop. Parents and guardians can register contestants at Cherry Berry (503 S. Main St.) prior to Hoopfest. The winning contestant will be selected by fans in attendance via applause and will receive a Cherry Berry prize pack.

The Shooting Challenge will involve four previously selected ISU students. Each student will be teamed up with an ISU basketball player in a relay race throughout the court. The shootout will involve making a free throw, three-point and half-court shot.

To conclude the night, the men’s and women’s basketball teams will run a traditional 10 minute scrimmage to showcase talent to ISU fans before the season begins.

All student participants will be selected at random times on campus leading up to Hoopfest.
