After a sloppy home loss to the University of Northern Iowa, Illinois State University football travels to Brookings, South Dakota, to take on South Dakota State University. The Redbirds badly need a win to keep them in the playoff picture. Find out how the Vidette sports staff thinks the ’Birds will fare.

There is no question that ISU’s fourth-quarter performance against a solid UNI team was disappointing last week, and it just gets tougher this week. SDSU very well may be the second-best team behind North Dakota State, and will give the Redbirds everything they can handle. I don’t expect ISU to rebound this week.

Last week's embarrassing fourth-quarter loss does not give a lot of hope for this weekend's game against the No. 4 Jackrabbits. This will be the toughest matchup since NDSU and with the ’Birds away from Hancock Stadium, I do not expect much of a fight.

Last time out, the Redbirds had their three-game win streak snapped after falling to UNI 27-10 at home. Now the ’Birds will look to get back on track as they head out of state for the first time to take on South Dakota State (7-2, 4-1 MVC). This will be an important game for ISU (6-3, 2-1 MVC) who trail the Jackrabbits by a game in the conference standings. This will be a tough game for the ’Birds going up against a tough SDSU defense, but if Illinois State has any plans on being a contender late in the season, it’s a must win game. It won’t be pretty, but I think the ’Birds get the job done this weekend.

In a matchup where two teams bring in top-notch defenses to the field this Saturday, both ranking in the top five of the Missouri Valley Conference, one would expect this to be a low-scoring affair. The difference between South Dakota State and Illinois State is that one of the offenses is proven and capable of being trusted. South Dakota State is the more proven team and them having home field advantage is going to be too overwhelming for the Redbirds to produce much on the offensive side of the ball.

Beating the Jackrabbits would do wonders for ISU’s poll rankings. However, South Dakota State seems like too much to handle based on its 7-2 record. The fact that the Redbirds will be on the road doesn’t strengthen my belief in them either.
