BSB: Soberano vs Arkansas

Illinois State's Kyle Soberano in the dugout against Arkansas Friday. ISU took down the No. 2 Razorbacks 3-2 in its season opener.

In a low-scoring affair, a seventh-inning run by Illinois State’s Kyle Soberano proved to be the difference the Redbirds needed Friday to upset No. 2 Arkansas at home, 3-2.

ISU came out fast, scoring two runs in the first inning. A single to left field from Jake McCaw brought home Aidan Huggins as the Redbirds darted out to an early lead. Ryan Cermak then scored on a walk with the bases loaded as Illinois State came out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

The game went quietly up until the bottom of the fifth inning where Arkansas answered back with two runs of its own. Home runs from Jalen Battles and Zach Gregory equalized the score at 2-2.

However, the Redbirds found their game-winning run at the top of the seventh as Huggins' double gave Soberano the chance to make it home and give the Redbirds a 3-2 lead that stood for the rest of the game.
