Illinois State men's tennis struggled to match No. 1-seeded Denver in the Summit League Championships semifinals, falling 4-1 to the Pioneers.

OMAHA, Neb. — No. 4-seeded Illinois State was unable to match No. 1-seeded Denver in the Summit League Championships semifinals, falling 4-1 and ending its 2022 campaign.

The Pioneers dominated early, taking doubles wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots before a singles victory at the No. 5 spot from ISU's Arvid Hjalte evened the score at 1-1.

That would be the only point the Redbirds could muster as Denver took wins in singles at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 spots to seal the 4-1 victory.

"What an emotional day this was," ISU head coach Mark Klysner said. "We played a great match and despite a 4-1 match score, the remaining matches were in third sets, and it was such a close match overall. Denver played very well, but we gave them a fight I don't think they expected."
