VB: Lund redbird classic

Illinois State volleyball's Nicole Lund going for a kill in the Redbirds five set loss to Northern Texas in the Redbird Classic.

Illinois State volleyball started round one of the Redbird Classic strong winning the first two sets over North Texas, but things quickly went downhill for the Redbirds.

During set one ISU fell behind early, trailing 6-1, but quickly caught fire, coming back to eventually win the set 25-22.

The Redbirds got off to a quick start in set two, taking off and never looking back, defeating the Mean Green 25-23. Early on, it was a Redbird attack that dominated, led by Nicole Lund, Tamara Otene and Sarah Kushner.

Set three saw the Redbirds struggle, letting errors get in their way and sinking their chances. The Redbirds kept it close but ultimately fell to the Mean Green 26-24. The Redbirds had 13 service errors through the three sets.

The Redbirds would struggle again to close out set four and allow North Texas to tie it up in sets as they fell 25-23.

In the fifth and final set, the Redbirds could not find their footing, and it was the Mean Green Machine that would take over the set winning 15-11. Rhett Robinson recorded a career-high 32 kills in the match for the Mean Green, leading the way in their win.

ISU head coach Leah Johnson credited Robinson's smart play to the Mean Green's comeback.

“She was very good; she was very efficient,” Johnson said. “She knew when we made an adjustment and then went to a different arsenal of shots. She played at a high level, 32 kills is not easy.”

The Redbirds were led by Lund who had a career-high 19 kills, followed by Kushner and Otene who each had 18.

The Redbirds play again Friday when they host the University of Illinois at 7 p.m.

“Failure fuels, that’s how you reset,” Johnson said. “If we’re not fired up to do something better, I’m not sure what else is going to fire us up.”
