The Illinois State volleyball team huddling up during their match with Dayton.

The Illinois State volleyball team split their Saturday matches at the Flyer-Raider Invitational.

In match one, the Redbirds took on the Dayton Flyers. This match did not last very long as the Flyers dominated every set, sweeping the Redbirds in three sets.

Set three was the closest of the match, but the Redbirds were only able to get within six, falling 25-19.

Errors once again haunted the Redbirds, recording 30 of them over a three-set match. Tamara Otene led the way in kills for the Redbirds with 12 in match one.

Game two was a different story. The Redbirds took on the Wright State Raiders and after falling set one they bounced right back taking set two 25-23.

Set three didn’t go the Redbirds way falling 25-18, but they would even it up in set four winning 25-21.

In a do-or-die situation, the Redbirds prevailed in set five, taking down the Raiders 15-11 and recording their third win of the season.

"So great to end this weekend on a positive note and cannot be more proud of our team fighting through all five sets to come out on top against a quality program like Wright State," head coach Leah Johnson said. "We're staying the course and growing together and I'm excited to ride this momentum into the Redbird Classic this weekend at Redbird Arena."

The Redbirds were led by Sarah Kushner who had 19 kills followed by Otene with 16. Katelyn Lefler continued to be a factor for the Redbirds, recording 54 assists.

The Redbirds head home for the Redbird Classic this weekend where they host the University of Illinois, Missouri and North Texas. The first match starts at 10 a.m. on Friday.
