Illinois State University women's tennis walked out of the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Tournament as big champions, leaving with four wins.

Friday

The ISU women’s tennis team had a perfect start on the first day of the MVC Tournament with all competitors earning a win to advance to the semifinals.

In Flight No. 2, Alexandra Abyasova defeated Daria Walczak from Drake University and Tara Damnjanovic won against Andrijana Brkic from Northern Iowa in Flight No. 4.

Elena Jankulovska beat Angela Sou from Stony Brook to get a Flight No. 5 win. Othilia Brodin earned a Flight No. 7 win against Juliana Martinez from Bradley.

The only doubles competitors on the day were Laura Fitzgerald and Abyasova, and they beat the team from Valparaiso to get a Flight No. 3 win. The two teams of Tijana Zlatanovic and Maria Potsi, and Damnjanovic and Penelope Abreu all received first-round byes.

Saturday

The Redbirds continued their strong showing at the MVC Individual Championships on Saturday as three doubles teams and six singles competitors advanced to championship matches on Sunday.

Zlatanovic took down Tiffani Nash from Missouri State in Flight No.1 to advance to the finals. Abyasova advanced to the Flight No. 2 championship by beating Bradley’s Bozana Lojpur, and Potsi defeated Chandrika Joshi from Stony Brook to advance to the Flight No. 3 finals.

Damnjanovic penciled herself into the Flight No. 4 championship by winning her match against Madalena Andrade from Bradley. Abreu advanced to the finals in Flight No. 6 and Brodin won her match in Flight No. 7 to compete in the championship on Sunday.

In doubles, Potsi and Zlatanovic won their match 8-1 against the team from Drake to advance to the Flight No.1 championship. Abreu and Damnjanovic advanced to the Flight No. 2 finals by defeating the team from Stony Brook, 8-3.

Fitzgerald and Abyasova beat the team from Bradley to earn a spot in the Flight No. 3 Championship.

Sunday

The Redbirds brought home some hard-ware after winning four championship matches on the last day of the MVC Individual Championship.

Zlatanovic won the Flight No. 1 title by beating Sandra Maletin from Bradley in a nail-biter. In Flight No. 6, Abreu beat Nikki Perlwitz, also from Bradley, to claim a singles championship.

Brodin claimed the final singles title of the day by defeating Nina Marjanovic in the Flight No. 7 championship match. Jankulovska captured third place in Flight No. 5 by defeating Mia Bertino from Valparaiso.

In doubles, the team of Fitzgerald and Abyasova defeated the team from Missouri State to come away with the Flight No. 3 championship.

The Redbirds will step on the court again when they compete in the ITA Midwest Super Regionals on Oct. 22- through Oct. 26 in Columbus, Ohio.
